The Fullerton Hotel, An Iconic Place To Stay In Singapore

The Fullerton Hotel, An Iconic Place To Stay In Singapore

After several trips to Singapore, I wanted to stay in a special place for my return. Something different. And the best was, in my view, to try the city’s most iconic hotel: the Fullerton Hotel. Not only a piece of history, it’s also a masterpiece of luxury.

Present in most of Marina Bay pictures, the Fullerton Hotel is located at the mouth of the bustling Singapore River and enjoys a central position in the city. This neoclassical old lady, originally built in 1928 as the General Post Office, is really a Singapore’s institution ; staying there means being part of its grand history :)

Design & Facilities

From outside, Fullerton Hotel building is pretty impressive. This iconic facade with its gorgeous colonnade imposes a beautiful neoclassical style in a district with plenty of modern glass buildings. What a surprising contrast!

The interior design reflects quite an opulent luxury, but let’s be honest: the hotel would deserve a renovation. The overall style, choice of material and colors is a bit dated. Anyway, this national monument remains a luxury hotel and five-star standards lovers will be pleased.

Outdoor pool

Pool side is truly fantastic, it’s so nice to swim overlooking downtown and its skycrapers; you really feel privileged to enjoy such a unique place. On top of that, I have to mention the Straits Club for Club room guests offering snacks, beverages throughout the day and canapés at evening time.

Accommodation

I stayed in the Esplanade Room #855 on top floor, with views over Victoria Theatre, the National Gallery and Singapore River. it’s just amazing to open the curtains and sleep with such a landscape.

Like the rest of the building’s interior, design is a bit dated even if material and furnitures used are quality. It’s even more visible in the bathroom: marble and bathtub are now vintage.. Anyway, it’s still does the job. I would recommend to book a Straits Club room, not only for the lounge access but also for bath amenities – from Bottega Veneta – and its newer room design.

Dining

I dined at Town Restaurant next to the lobby, where I enjoyed a delicious Fullerton Burger with one of the best bread ever, and french fries. Menu is obviously more Asian and Singaporian oriented than Western oriented, and from what I have seen on other tables dishes are well executed.

Straits Club lounge

I briefly visited Lighthouse Restaurant on top floor with Marina Bay views, proposing a traditional Italian menu. Ideal for a romantic dinner!

Level of exigency

Fullerton Hotel’s staff reaches all five-star standards, but more business-like and a bit impersonal. This being said, I have been escorted to my room after check-in, housekeeping was faultless and lounge staff very kind… In other words, it does the job.

Conclusion

There is no point, Fullerton Hotel is definitely an institution in Singapore and thanks to its location it represents a nice starting point to visit the city. To enhance your stay, I recommend to book a room offering access to Straits Club and ask for a view over Marina Bay.

Stayed from January 02nd to 05th, 2019 – Unsponsored media stay.

The Fullerton Hotel Singapore opened in 2001 and is composed of 405 rooms and suites. I stayed in an Esplanade room – around 50sqm – which public rate starts at SGD 600/night.
